TOPICS: CULTURAL NEUROPSYCHOLOGY in Fall 2026 (PY3091A)

How do culture, language, education, and social experience shape the way we think — and even the way the brain is assessed clinically? This course introduces students to cultural neuropsychology: how culture influences cognition and brain-behavior relationships. We explore how cognitive processes such as memory, attention, perception, and executive functioning vary across cultural contexts, and why neuropsychological testing cannot be “culture-free.” The course emphasizes real-world applications, including clinical diagnosis, global mental health, and ethical issues in psychological assessment across diverse populations. We will look at cross-cultural factors as well as multicultural assessments, and how these ideas are different. We build concepts gradually through accessible readings, case studies, and discussion-based learning.
