Want to learn the basics of Ancient Greek while immersing yourself in one of the great works of classical literature? This course introduces students to the fundamentals of Ancient Greek—including the alphabet, basic sentence structure, and key declensions—while guiding them through a close reading of Plato’s Symposium.
Plato’s Symposium is not only a captivating dialogue on the nature of love (eros); it also stages a rich interplay between philosophy and literature. Through Plato’s eyes, we will revisit key figures from the Greek tradition, such as Aristophanes, and explore how philosophical inquiry both draws from and challenges poetic expression.
