The Senior Applied Project is one of the capstone options available to students in the Global Communications, Fashion Studies, Journalism, and Communications & Civil Society majors. This hands-on seminar builds a capstone learning pathway that calls upon students’ previous work in their major, yet via a general theme or issue that the class will explore throughout the semester. Applying learning and course material from the major to a contemporary ‘problem’ or issue, students will complete a final collaborative media project which reflects different angles on this issue. The final project also includes a written component in which students will reflect critically upon their process. This capstone seminar aims to build a bridge between the academic components of the majors and how that knowledge can be applied in a real-world setting and communicated to a professional audience.
Learning Outcomes
- Students will be able to demonstrate an ability to use creative and critical thinking, drawing on past coursework in the major and the core curriculum, to articulate an issue or question that will be addressed through a creative methodology, and justify the choice of methodology and media in relation to the topic, issue or question.
- Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of existing literature and media texts or projects which have addressed this issue and employed similar methodologies.
- Students will be able to demonstrate the capacity to develop and realize a creative project, employing the chosen methodology, and to refine the project through iterations in critical workshops with colleagues and faculty.
- Students will be able to demonstrate the capacity to critically reflect upon this process and product using relevant theory, and to communicate the concept and originality of your intervention in a language and format appropriate to academic and professional contexts.
- You will apply the knowledge and skills that you acquired through both the core curriculum and your major’s requirements to a disciplinary, interdisciplinary, cumulative or project-based experience in order to express your growth and learning while at AUP. (CCC LO1)
