This course explores the key features and prominent themes of horror cinema from a variety of critical perspectives, while navigating through its foremost subgenres. Students will investigate horror’s allegorical potential by discussing major classic and contemporary films and by considering the films’ cultural, industrial and aesthetic contexts.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Students will be able to identify the key themes, prominent styles, formal strategies and industrial contexts of horror cinema.
  2. Students will be able to analyze the ways in which the monster figure functions as a metaphor that can complicate and illuminate multiple issues of identity, nation, and ideology.
  3. Students will be able to demonstrate an engagement with a variety of critical approaches involved in the study of the horror genre.
