This graduate-level fiction workshop is dedicated to the discussion and critique of student work. Students submit two to three times per semester and compose written critiques in advance of workshop. Student work is supplemented with a range of published writing to deepen our creative practice and expand our sense of what it is possible to do on the page.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Students will be able to compose polished works of fiction that demonstrate knowledge of narrative structure, point of view, character development, and rigorous attention to language at the sentence level (even if one's works are experimental in form).
  2. Students will be able to analyze published works of fiction, both canonical and contemporary texts, from the perspective of craft, identifying stylistic and narrative strategies such as the handling of time, point of view, and the development of voice.
  3. Students will be able to give effective critique of student writing, identifying strengths and areas of improvement (written and oral).
  4. Students will be able to revise and polish fiction manuscripts to professional standards, integrating feedback from workshop, developing strategies for revision.
