This art history seminar examines the notion of idolatry, that is, the worship of lifeless images or false gods. We will focus on cross-cultural exchanges between Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas, considering both sacred images and “false idols” as part of a global history of image making and destruction in the Early Modern world.
