This course introduces students to the modern literature of the Arab world through works by canonical or established writers in addition to contemporary work. Primary texts are read in addition to a variety of historical, critical, and other materials, with modern Arabic literature presented as a case study in world literature, translation studies, comparative modernisms, or comparative literary history.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Students will read the literature of the modern Arab world in the context of the modern intellectual, social, and political history of the region.
  2. Students will understand the development of modern Arabic literature as a literature, as well as main debates and trends.
  3. Students will develop a sense of the place of modern Arabic literature within external literary critical frameworks, including world literature, translation studies, and comparative modernisms.
